FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, DC — On April 17, 2018, Darlene Wright Powell, Esquire was formally sworn into the bar of the Supreme Court of the United States. After a private breakfast at the courthouse with ten other members of the American Association for Justice and invited guests, greetings from the Clerk of the Supreme Court of the United States and other officials, and a photo session with the official court photographer, the eleven barristers from around the country were escorted into the courtroom. Attorney Powell was the only Maryland lawyer in the small group. After Attorney Powell was presented to the court, Chief Justice John Roberts approved the motion for her admission. She then took the required oath administered by the Clerk of the Supreme Court of the United States.
Decades ago Attorney Powell almost had to litigate a tax case before the Supreme Court of the United States in the case of Powell et ux. v. Internal Revenue Service; however, it was not necessary to do so when the Supreme Court turned down the IRS’ appeal of the decision of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit which ruled in the Plaintiffs’ favor. In that case, the federal appellate court victory of Attorney Powell and her co-counsel (the late Clayton Powell, Jr.) resulted in sweeping changes at the Internal Revenue Service which benefited taxpayers nationwide.
Attorney Powell is a Managing Attorney of the Law Offices of Darlene Wright Powell, P.A. located in Bowie, Maryland in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The Law Offices of Darlene Wright Powell, P.A. is a general practice law firm which represents clients throughout Maryland and the District of Columbia in civil, criminal and corporate law matters.
